As a 23 year old who is trying to make a name for myself within this ever changing world of education I often find myself reaching out to others who have more experience than I. My path is slightly different than others as I choose to venture to Texas and gain my first year of teaching experience through the help of the Teach For America organization.
Teach For America accepted me into the Dallas – Fort Worth Corps where I moved the day after I graduated from the University of Washington in the spring of 2015. I received a unique training over a seven week prior where I learned how to lesson plan, how to navigate through racial and identity topics with students, and student taught. I became part of a network of phenomenal teachers who were readily available to help me when it was needed.
I became a first grade teacher at a public charter school just south of Dallas where I self taught 25 children who were ready to learn. The days seemed long at times but the relationships that I built with my students clarified to me that I had chosen the correct profession.
